Well, just one week ago I was readying myself for the 84th Annual Academy Awards. Red carpet pre-show started early in the morning while everyone anxiously awaited the arrival of the celebrities! The million dollar question of the evening: Who are you wearing?
And honestly, while I am interested in film and cinema, this year I don’t think I saw a single film that was nominated for ‘Best Picture.’ I watched only to see what (and who) the stars were wearing. Period.
I had many a moment where I ooohed and ahhhed over a gorgeous gown. There were many I loved, and a few I loathed. Overall, though, I think it was a success: as far as fashion is concerned. There were far more lovely gowns than the not-so-lovely kind. Which is lucky, because sometimes that is not the case.
Here are my top-10 looks from the 2012 Academy Awards:
#10 Rooney Mara in Givenchy Couture
#9 Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Antonio Berardi
#8 Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford
# 7 Stacy Keibler in Marchesa
# 6 Rose Byrne in Vivienne Westwood
# 5 Glenn Close in Zac Posen
# 4 Maya Rudolph in Johanna Johnson
# 3 Milla Jovovich in Elie Saab Couture
# 2 Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton
# 1 Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen
- Maria Menounos in Maria Lucia Hohan
- Giuliana Rancic in Tony Ward Couture
- Leslie Mann in Roberto Cavalli
- Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace
- Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji
- Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli
- Cameron Diaz in Gucci Première
Now, while most of the women in attendance looked absolutely stunning, there were a few that I didn’t care for. Obviously those must be listed as well. When doing a best-dressed list, one must also include a worst-dressed. Duh.
2012 Academy Awards: Least Favorite Dressed (none of them look that bad, I just don’t love the dresses!)
# 3 Natalie Portman in Vintage Christian Dior Couture
There is no denying that Natalie is a beautiful woman. I know this. But for some reason, I feel like there is something off about this. I don’t really like the polka-dots and I feel like it is a little bit too drab to be paired with such an extravagant necklace. She has the whole ‘old-Hollywood’ thing going on here with the retro hair and super-glam jewels, but the dress falls short. It’s just too plain, IMO.
# 2 Berenice Bejo in Elie Saab Couture
First of all, I DO NOT like the color of this gown. I am just not feelin’ the mint color on Berenice. Secondly, I am not crazy about the sleeves or the wide waistband. Honestly, I feel like this looks like an old-lady gown. Seriously. I am picturing Helen Mirren in this gown right now and it is perfect. For her. Berenice is lovely, I just wish she would’ve opted for something more youthful, in a more vibrant color.
# 1 Viola Davis in Vera Wang
This is a controversial choice, I know. This exact gown made many best-dressed lists. But I cannot help myself. I have to be honest. I just don’t like it. On Viola anyway. The color is outstanding, but that is all I like about it. I think it is ill-fitting in the bust area, I don’t like the zig-zag cut out at the bottom and I am not crazy about the pleating. And another thing….I don’t like the color of Viola’s hair. I think it is fine that she ditched her wig in favor of her real hair, I’m cool with that. But this is clearly not the natural color of her real hair. Why bleach it? I don’t get it. And I don’t like it.
There you have it! My personal take on the 84th Annual Academy Awards!
What do you think of my picks? Anyone I missed that you think I should have included? Anyone I included that you think I should’ve omitted? Questions? Comments?
