My Weekend in Nola!

Hello friends!  As you may have noticed, I have been a bit absent on the blog as of late!  Life has been crazy and hectic!  Something that I would like to share with you guys, though, is a recent family trip to New Orleans!  My husband and I were lucky enough to go to Super Bowl 47 in The Big Easy!!!  My brother-in-law, Colin Kaepernick, plays for the San Francisco 49ers, so the whole family made the trip to support him and the team!  And let me tell you….what an amazing experience!  I AM SERIOUSLY SO GRATEFUL.

Our adventure began Thursday January 31st…Kyle and I (along with my sister-in-law Devon and brother-in-law George) boarded the 49ers Family & Friends charter plane after meeting up at Candlestick Park in the early morning.

Fast forward 5 hours….HELLO LOUISIANA!

just touched down in Nola!

So, once we arrived, we headed to our hotel to meet up with family, grab a drink and head over to the 49ers Family and Friends welcome party!

The party was tons of fun!  Most of the players stopped by to visit with family and take pictures with friends and fans.  There was a plethora of food, drinks, Mardi Gras masks and beads!  Kyle and I hung out for a while before sneaking off with Colin for a little bit of alone time!  I mean, geez, we never get to see him, so when we do it’s definitely nice to get some quiet time where we can actually talk to each other!   The team had a midnight curfew, so after lots of visiting, laughing and hugging, we said goodnight.  Kyle then hit the casino while I hit the sheets!  Traveling makes me tired, man!

Friday morning we woke up to a gorgeous day:

First up on our to-do list:  check out Cafe Du Monde and their world-famous beignets!  The cafe was first built in 1862 and is located on Decatur Street down in the French Quarter….walking distance from our hotel (we stayed at The DoubleTree downtown).  Kyle and I both went traditional: we each had a café au lait and a bag of beignets.  And MAN OH MAN!  Cafe Du Monde did not disappoint!  The French-style beignets are sort of hunks of square-shaped dough that is deep-fried and covered in massive amounts of powdered sugar.  I expected them to taste like doughnuts, but surprisingly enough, they tasted nothing like that!  They have a unique flavor, and I highly recommend picking up a bag of these tasty treats if you are ever in The Big Easy.  So yummy!

powdered sugar in ma face!

After stuffing our faces, we decided to walk around a bit.  See what the French Quarter had to offer!  And guess what?  There are so many cool shops, street vendors, bars and restaurants…there isn’t enough time in the day for everything!  Another positive?  The weather!  The weather was absolutely perfect while we were in town!  So lucky!

Colin on the side of the aquarium!

QB’s on stilts!

Later in the afternoon we met up with our good friend Stephanie who was in town hosting some Super Bowl events and parties.  And guess what?!  She introduced us to one of her good friends who was also in town….SI model/host/actress/chef/comedian extraordinaire Chrissy Teigen!

Chrissy was unbelievably nice and stunning in person.  Gorgeous, really.  And she was nice enough to pose with me for a quick photo!  Thanks, Chrissy!

Later that evening we met up with some family and headed over to Bourbon Street for dinner and drinks (mainly drinks)!  Our first stop was a cute little spot called Saints & Sinners owned by Magic Mike himself, Channing Tatum.

We had a quick bite, guzzled some drinks, chatted with our waiter about the best local spots….and we were off!  To drink!  Hurricanes, grenades and sazerac’s OH MY!

grenade double duty!

So, after a fun-filled evening on Bourbon Street, the entire family met up at the 49ers team hotel to spend a little bit of time with Colin.  The Marriot was nice enough to set aside a banquet room where the family could get together privately.  And then….a surprise guest!  Colin’s University of Nevada Reno football coach, Chris Ault stopped by to say hello!

reunited and it feels so good!

It was nice to see the two chatting and catching up….and I’m fairly certain I heard the phrase “I’m so proud of you!” several times.  Very sweet.  Tons of hugs later, Colin had to leave and re-join his teammates.   And the rest of the Kaepernick clan took to the streets of New Orleans for some late night exploring!  Kyle and I walked over to where the Playboy party was being held to see if we could spot any rogue celebs.  No such luck.  Although we did catch a glimpse of Anna Faris being chauffeured in a black Audi over to the party.  Her car was stopped in traffic for quite a long time so she occasionally hopped out and took pictures with fans.  She’s pretty darn adorable, too!  After our Anna-sighting we decided to call it a night and head back to the hotel.

Saturday morning we awoke to even better weather and wanted to get a move on!  Didn’t want to dilly-dally and waste the day away lounging in the hotel.  Too much to do!  Too much to see!   And, I was on a mission:  to find the perfect Mardi Gras mask.

Mission accomplished:

Got my fortune told in a voo-doo shop:

Aaaaand got to play with a giant Drew Brees head:

who dat?!

Even managed to fit in an actual sit-down meal:

Okay, this was Ky-ky’s food. I would never.eat.this.

Now for the fun part of Saturday.  Our friend Stephanie invited us to accompany her and another friend to the DirecTV party that was being held at Mardi Gras World!  The four of us hopped in a cab and jetted straight to the party.  And guess what?!  It was AMAZEBALLS!  As soon as we arrived, we were handed drinks, being introduced to people left and right…..THEN JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE TOOK THE STAGE.  Justin Freaking Timberlake, y’all!  We were all dancing and singing along….then Jay-Z came out!  Yes, you heard me correctly.  Justin and Jay-Z on stage together!  It was literally one of the greatest concerts, like, ever!  So much fun!

Justin bringing sexy back! (sorry I had to)

After the concert Kyle & I returned back to the hotel around 2 a.m. and decided to call it a night.  A truly fun night with friends!

Sunday morning:  Game Day.  The big game.  SUPERBOWL.  Kick off wasn’t scheduled until 5:30 pm, but as soon as we woke up we started getting ready to go.  Once the whole gang was dressed, downstairs and ready we headed over to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.  The stadium was about a fifteen minutes walk from The DoubleTree…once we arrived….wow.  Just wow.

It’s hard to describe, but once we arrived, and put into perspective where we were and what was happening, it was just so surreal.  We were going to watch Colin play in the Superbowl, on top of which was only his 10th NFL career start.  How amazing/crazy/insane/cool is that?!  It was pretty awesome.

Little Colin fans!

Once seated, it was strange.  Both Kyle and myself were so nervous, yet at the same time felt like crying.  It is hard to put to words the feelings that rush over you.  I know myself personally, I felt so proud and happy for Colin, like I knew this day would come.  Just never dreamed it would come so soon.

Now, we all know the outcome of the game.  The 49ers came so close, but ended up losing.  And you know what?  Losing is never easy, but it’s okay.  I am so incredibly proud of Colin for playing such an amazing game, leading the team, and almost winning.  But this is just the beginning.  The beginning of something great.  Like I said, I am incredibly proud of the whole team.  What a great season!

I simply cannot say this enough….this was such an awesome trip and I am so thankful that I was able to be a part of it!  Special thanks to Colin, Stephanie and Shawn for not only making the trip possible, but making it amazing!

Until next year……  ;)

Hot Collaboration: Neiman Marcus & Target

Something awesome and amazing has happened.  Two of my most favorite places have come together and produced a line of truly great products.  Neiman Marcus and Target.  Yes, it’s true.  The two came together, and along with some big name designers, introduced a line of clothing/accessories/home decor that launched Saturday December 1st both at Target and Neiman Marcus stores nationwide.

Naturally I had to get a piece of this fantastic pie!  And it came in the form of these adorable beanies:

These cuties were created by Band of Outsiders and retail for $29.99 for the set.  And let me just say, I wore these to a football game recently, and got tons of compliments!  I mean, people were stopping me to ask where I got ‘em!

me and colin

My husband and I wore the beanies all day, but he didn’t like the way any of our photographs together came out, so I asked my brother-in-law (who happens to be San Francisco 49ers starting QB Colin Kaepernick) to be my best friend for a second, and he reluctantly obliged.  Aren’t we cute?  :)  Even big, strong football players need a best friend.  *wink wink*

Some other fun stuff from the Neiman Marcus for Target line:

thom browne blazer

Thom Browne blazer $149.99

Tory Burch drink bottle & lunchbox $19.99 each

alice and olivia luggage

Alice & Olivia luggage $179.99

marc jacobs

Marc Jacobs zipper clutch $69.99

tracy reese

Tracy Reese dessert plates $39.99 (set of 4)

robert rodriguez

Robert Rodriguez dress $99.99

Those are just a few of the many great things this Neiman Marcus/Target Collaboration has produced!  For a full list of products visit Neiman Marcus and/or Target stores, or of course check ‘em out online at NeimanMarcus.com and/or Target.com.  Happy Shopping!

49ers Win….In More Ways Than One!

Ken here with a quick little post about what I did all day today while CandyBarbie went to work.

Well, pretty much….I did nothing.  I never left the house.  I waited until 5pm to take a shower.  And I watched football and 9/11 memorials all day.

But the one thing I did do a little bit of is tweet.  And by tweet, I mean that I tweeted Happy Birthday to @Rhianmarie (cause that’s my girl from across the pond) and then retweeted about 10 of Marisa Miller’s tweets in regards to her fandom of the SF 49ers and the SF Giants and their wins today.

And let me tell you ladies reading this something….women who like sports are sexy.  I didn’t say women who  play sports (although some of those are sexy too),  but I said women who LIKE them.  You can be girly, be a fashionista, and still enjoy a ball game with your man.  In fact, some of the cutest and sexiest girls I’ve seen in my time on this earth were ones wearing things like ball caps, jerseys, and tall tube socks with stripes.

Marisa Miller for the NFL

Leather ball + Leather pants = WOW

I don't think anything else needs to be said!

So there you have it!  Supermodels like football.  My favorite one in fact.  And because supermodels are the prettiest, that makes them the best.  And why wouldn’t you listen to the best?

Fortunately for me, I also roll with a hot chick that likes football.

CandyBarbie and @Kaepernick7

There you have it.  My contribution for the day.  Hope you all enjoy it.

San Francisco 49ers v. Houston Texans

As you all know (well, if you follow me on Twitter @misslindsaykaep) I went to San Francisco with my hubby and FIL yesterday to attend the San Francisco 49ers football game at Candlestick Park.  And it  was super freezing!  And I wore sandals! Doh!  Needless to say, I froze my butt off!  But, on the plus side, I got to take a picture with some of the Gold Rush cheerleaders!  Woo!

CandyBarbie loves cheerleaders!

The game didn’t start until 5 pm, so we had plenty of time to check out the field before it got crazy-busy!

Notice the empty seats all around…..they did fill up eventually…..

Once the game finally started, I was able to snap a few photos of my favorite player Colin Kaepernick (@Kaepernick7) watching his teammates a little bit before warming up on the sidelines…

And of course, some silly pictures of ourselves….

At the end of the day, the 49ers did not walk away with the win, but we still had a nice day together!  We got to briefly see Colin after the game and saw his teammate (and former roommate!) Bruce Miller (@bmiller_49) too!  There were hugs all around and then we hit the road!

On the way home we stopped and had In-N-Out cheeseburgers for dinner!  Yum!

Family, friends, football and food!  Pretty great Saturday, if you ask me!   ;)

Happy Sunday!

CandyKen Guest Post Part 2

So here we are at the second half of our San Francisco shopping bonanza yesterday.  CandyBarbie is wiped out.  She slept through the best parts of both True Blood and the new Curb Your Enthusiasm tonight.  And that leaves it up to me to finish this day of blogging.

After leaving The Cheesecake Factory, the group went up to Niketown SF so that Colin could make sure he’s fully decked out in all Nike all the time (he recently signed a contract to be sponsored by Nike).   Needless to say the entire family is now a Nike family.  Upon arriving, Colin met with the customer service department to get his shopping totes.  He offered to let us pick out anything we wanted (none of us took him up on it though…this time) and we offered to help him make decisions.  And make the experience a fun one at the same time.

Then we started goofing around.

He laughed first, I got caught on camera....doh!

After talking to some fans and store employees and picking out FOUR pair of shoes and some workout gear, it was time to go.  But before we did, we posed for one more picture.

Kaepernick, Kaepernick, Miller

We left Niketown and went next door to Cole Haan.  Most people don’t know this, but Cole Haan is a subsidiary of Nike.  We wanted to check out their gear as I’ve had some very nice CH boots in the past and told Colin that they had some good stuff he should look at.  He agreed after looking around and CandyBarbie even found a really nice looking cropped leather jacket but it was quite expensive and she decided to hold off on making such a purchase.
We made a quick stop in Saks Mens after Colin and Bruce agreed to let CandyBarbie pick clothes out for them to try on, but Saks was unusually lacking in stuff this time so we left rather abruptly.  Right next door to Saks is Cartier.  Bruce made a comment to me about how nice their sunglasses with the wooden frames are and I agreed stating that I thought I could recall Brad Pitt doing an add campaign for those aviator glasses quite awhile back.
Upon entering the store, CandyBarbie and I recognized a familiar face.  His name is Rand and he is an employee of Cartier San Francisco.  We recognized him because awhile back I bought Lindsay one of their silk cord “Love” bracelets as a birthday present and Rand was the sales associate that helped us.  He’s also named Rand, which happens to be both our uncle’s name and Colin’s middle name!  Rand is extremely friendly and immediately offered to show us anything we wanted to look at.  After a little while, he recognized us as former customers and had a nice time talking about our Paris trip and specifically Versailles (which was CB’s favorite part of our trip).  He also started pulling out anything and everything and putting it on Colin, Bruce, and even a nice diamond watch on CandyBarbie herself.

Cartier Glasses and Watch...Superstar!

After all agreeing that the guys need to make it to their second contracts before making purchases at Cartier (and thanking Rand for his help) we left and headed down to Niemans again to look at more shoes.

Giving their opinions to CandyBarbie

The Jimmy Choo’s I wrote about in part one we had thought about getting if they had them at Nieman’s.  They did not so we went downstairs to the mens department to try on clothes.  Amazingly, this afternoon I picked up a copy of People and there were the EXACT SAME PAIR on her highness, Kate Middelton.  Now I want to go off topic here for just a second and talk about my wife’s uncanny ability to pick out the most fashionable clothes.  And she picks them out at all price ranges, ahead of when they are seen being worn in public by celebs.
I actually feel bad about the fact that my job requires us to live an a place that doesn’t support jobs like personal shoppers and stylists.  It’s literally stunned me how many times we’ve been shopping together, she’s pulled things off the rack and proclaimed that she loves them, they’re so cute…only to have her then show me the exact same items 2-3 weeks later in an issue of US Weekly or People being worn by a major celebrity.  It happens no less than 5-6 times per year easily.  And even more frequently she points out things being worn on red carpet shows or pulls pictures off the net for this blog to proclaim them “cute” or “hideous” only to have those same items show up on E! Fashion Police as the “Look of the Week” or “Best Dressed” or in the case of the hideous, “Worst Dressed”.  She truly is missing out on her calling in life and I feel sad about it.
Anyway, back to the days shopping events.
Downstairs the boys were able to find some things.  Colin refused to try on a salmon colored Prada shirt, but he did try on a very nice Gucci button up with french cuffs and a pair of True Religions that fortunately for him were on sale over 60% off (and very stylish…a rare, rare find indeed).  He also laughed at a sweater he saw on the rack that he called “the Cosby sweater” only to try it on for fun and decide it actually looked pretty good.

Colin sporting the Cosby look

We left after Colin picked up the pair of True’s and headed next door to Louis Vuitton to further goof around in stores we really didn’t have any intentions of making a purchase in.  There was one ridiculously nice looking button up shirt in there (I liked it and Colin liked it more than CandyBarbie I think) but it was too much for any of us to actually buy.
Leaving LV, we headed for our last stop…Gucci.  There was one mission which was to look at men’s belts for my brother, which wound up turning into two missions when CandyBarbie found a pair of reasonably priced shoes that she fell in love with.  We actually wound up being in the store until 30 minutes after they closed, but they were very accommodating to us and we appreciated it greatly.
At this point Colin and Bruce were done for the day and so were we.  We shook hands, gave hugs, and said our good bye’s before parting our ways.  The boys headed to the parking garage for the drive back to Santa Clara and we headed back to BART.
After a long (but relaxing) train ride back to Dublin and another long drive back to our home, we both fell asleep on the couch and had to drag our way back up to the bedroom.
All-in-all it was an extremely fun and extremely tiring day.
Next weekend it will be more of the same when CandyBarbie helps my sister shop for wedding dresses while I attend my second Giants game of the season against the Milwaukee Brewers.
